Breaking News: EMR, Scales, and Mad Amounts of Economic Stimulus Money

Talk about following up on the previous blog entry – no sooner do I commute home, the news breaks that United States Vice President Joe Biden announced $1.2 Billion (that’s BILLION) in grants, part of the $787 billion U.S. economic stimulus plan, to help hospital transition to electronic medical records (EMR).  No joke folks.  In fact the grant money “will not be available until Oct. 1, 2009”. That’s “Washingtoncode” for “we’re Democrat’s and we are so determined about this, we’re going to start slinging HUGE money in less than 60 days”.  HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was at the announcement with Vice President Biden.

Of the $1.2 billion, $589 million will go to establish centers to help hospitals and clinic-level facilities with the technical aspects of choosing systems for EMR/EHR health records.  $564 million will go towards helping hospital share patient health data with each other.

I will let the numbers speak for themselves…its all about EMR for greater efficency, cost reduction and accuracy baby, and you don’t want to be left behind.
