Medical Provider CPT Code for Whole Body Composition Assessment Implemented

An important development for medical providers in regards to screening forcpt_2015 cardiometabolic and diabetes risk factors occurred recently.  The American Medical Association (AMA) for the first time implemented the Category III CPT code (Current Procedural Terminology code) 0358T for Whole Body Composition Assessment utilizing Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), supine position, on July 1, 2014.  This is in recognition of the clinical value available in the form of emerging, medically-validated bioelectrical impedance analysis technology now available and seeing rapid adoption by U.S. care providers and internationally as well.  An example of this cutting-edge technology can be seen here.  However, it is important to note that all Category III CPT codes are only temporary and are used to report emerging technology, services, and procedures.  These codes as such may, or may not, be covered by insurance.  The patient’s health plan would need to be consulted by the provider to verify coverage of a Category III CPT code.

In contrast, a Category I CPT code would be the ‘permanent’ code that would qualify for reimbursement.  Category III codes, released biannually, are a first step on the way to becoming a Category I.
